I don't know when this message will find you as I believe you're still in Nalawi as I'm typing it. We're told your group will return within a few days of the rest of us; it may not find you until then. In any case I hope you are doing well with them. It's a good thing you and the others are doing them. I imagine the Nalawi will rely on your teachings for quite a while.
When you are back with the rest of us, however, I wondered if we could arrange a time to meet again? I don't mean to push, but I'm eager to find out what healing my eye injury would entail. If it's a difficult process, it might be best to start soonest, before we're put on another assignment.
[Time dilation is an odd thing, but Laedo, receiving network bursts all at once shortly before being pulled back to the festivities in Oska, receives this in a better state of mind than he would have, had it been shortly after Evan's last meeting with him.]
The most that we can do here has been done, infrastructure built, savings put away for the worst of the rainy months. We expect to be called back soon, though what that means between our times, I am not certain.
I have learned much about medicine from young Sieglinde and the other proteges with whom I remained behind... but I suspect that with an injury of your calibre, a spelled replacement is the only solution. Prepare with ALASTAIR, if you must, for any precautions you'd like to take. If they have replacements, I can fuse one to the other, though a replacement from scratch is possible... it will take a little longer. I will meet with you once we have unpacked.
I've been alright. Being back at Oska is a salve. It's mostly quiet here, although you've missed quite the welcome-back party.
I will check with ALASTAIR, but I haven't heard anything about them supplying prosthetics. We should be so lucky. If I shouldn't be able to find a replacement properly, how much longer is 'longer'? I should probably let our mutual employers know if I'm down for the count for more than a few days, I suppose.
How is Sieglinde? For that matter, how are all of you? From my understanding you've been there quite a while already, have you?
I may have missed the party, and I may have not. We are not so certain of the precision of the time dilation. I suppose if we did not, you would not be sending me this message, however.
[A pause, a thoughtful snort at time shenanigans that he's not well equipped to handle.]
'Longer' is over the course of a day or two. I will want to attempt to examine your remaining eye, map it and create a framework for the replacement. Knitting the new one together will take concentration, and then undoing the scars to your injuries and fusing the nerves together will take more precise work--more precise than the replacement of a limb, unfortunately. You will probably need several days to recuperate, and I will want to make adjustments if necessary.
[Evan comes up video-style on the network, given the video responses he's been getting to his text missives. Honestly the description of the process has made him slightly nervous, although his determination to see this through is such that that only manifests as a bit of a flutter in the redhead's bearing.]
Ahh, that does sound...involved. I'll put in the necessary warnings ahead of time.
Have you ever done this before? Is there anything in particular I should, um, be worried about?
[i.e. what can go wrong. Please, Laedo, tell him nothing will go wrong.]
[Luckily, Laedo's calmed enough that he doesn't look particularly nervous; nothing has been left so unresolved in this world that he is preoccupied.]
We are trained in all manner of triage, from mending deep cuts and crushing blows to replacing functional parts of the body. Humans are part of our training, [he adds, seeing the worry in Evan's somewhat haggard face, and lifting his nose in a kind of self-assured pride.] Unless ALASTAIR requires us to part with our inborn magic again, you will be in good hands.
[The degree of proficiency that he is so confident can restore smashed limbs and go so far as to promise the return of an eyeball almost chills Evan as it awes him.]
What a world yours must be that those kinds of injuries aren't... aren't permanent things anymore. I mean, we do alright back home, but... once you lose a body part, it's gone.
Um. Laedo, I want to thank you again for this. It's been... well. It's not been my favourite experience.
We live in peace, mostly. [Laedo looks away from the little projection, now that there is a screen before him and not a recorded voice reading Evan's text notes. Peace for most of it, except for the occasional explosive points when it is very truly not a peaceful existence.]
Your help was invaluable. I support my team--especially those who understand the value of teamwork. Rest if you can. We should be arriving within a short time frame, I suspect.
[Evan, the uncertainty of incipient unpleasantness brewing in his belly becoming enough to make him uncomfortable, looks to bow out of the brief exchange as the conversation seems to wind down.]
Ping me when you arrive, alright? We'll sort out the details when you're back, when you can get a feel for Oska yourself. I look forward to hearing what you guys have been up to, in any case.
I do not recall setting up a payment for any such Piper. I've already made my arrangements with those who requested my aid, and they infact reached out to me previously. If you're to beg you'll have to come to me in person.
Seriously? I'm busy. I'm a busy guy. I've got stuff to do, pipes to... pipe.
Ughhhhh fine, but I'm not gonna beg. You said if I did it you would try to do your enchanty stuff to one of my things, that is called a VERBAL CONTRACT... probably. Where are you?
[A laugh, then; Laedo knows the truth. He's a massive dragon and he's had to deal with their antics, too, for three months longer than this charming human, even.]
You'll find me in the courtyard. Bring a chair, your pipingness, this might take some time.
[Neither of those descriptors sounds especially charming, and Laedo considers what he thinks this buffoon might do with such an amplified weapon. He hedges for a few moments, settling to a sit and making a fuss about curling his tail around his toes, resettling his wings, and then shaking out his neck. The equivalent of cracking knuckles, though it might not translate as well.]
I could do much with it. I assume that you have been using it for self defense. Has it proved sufficient?
...You want a dousing rod? [Laedo glares at Rhys doubtfully, not sure if a super-soaker taser is something that any sane person should give to this human. He's considering the merits of forcing Rhys to read some kind of user's manual before he kills himself, or worse, others.]
[If nothing else, that seals Laedo's concerns. He narrows both eyes in thought at the little gremlin--no, human--because he can see where this is going. One cautious whisper goes so far as to suggest he'll be zapped first. No, that won't do.
He lifts one side of his muzzle in a terrifying smile, baring an arm-length eye tooth as he extends his torso-sized palm.]
May I see your instrument? It should not take long to make the adjustments.
[ Holding it out, he says, ] So, 'making adjustments', what does that actually entail? I'm kind of foggy on the details. What, you just think about doing it and it happens? That sounds wrong, I feel like that can't be right.
That would be what my kind call a 'rip off', [Laedo replies, accepting the little tazer with grace. He navigates it between two long fingers, pressed between opposite toe-beans. Setting it carefully down, he works a little net of magic around it to feel out its mechanisms, to augment them with new capabilities. Of course, to a non-magic user, there's very little to tell that Laedo isn't ripping the man off at all. If one were watching extremely closely, they might see dust floating about the whole finger-wiggling procedure zinging along magic lines in ways that shouldn't be possible, according to natural physics... but that's not much to one who can't see auras.
In a moment, Laedo is done. He gestures for the man to pick his weapon up, now part dousing rod in the fact that it will inexplicably aim towards water.
Is that it? [ It's a bit of a let-down, really. He'd been hoping for flashing lights, sparkles, glowy stuff, something. Where's the pageantry? He frowns, disappointed, but reaches for his weapon anyway. Too impatient to even try it out, he immediately turns on his heel. ] K, thanks, bye.
[Laedo, watching the man leave, gives a snort of disappointment. He'd been hoping that Rhys would at the very least give it a try first, just to see the look on his face.
Ah well, some things aren't meant to be enjoyed straight from the oven, as it were. He flicks his tail impatiently, but for now he'll let the noisome human go.]
((Feel free to have that thing do anything from be able to douse for water to full on water-jet and electric zap! Whatever's most fun for you... Laedo could have done any of the things but I figure you'll know best. >:]))
